GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — John McCain said Thursday that his proposal to suspend the gas tax for three months this summer may need to be extended longer if high gas prices continue to take a toll on the economy.
“I think we ought to seriously look at whether we need to have it be longer or not depending on what the economy (does),” McCain said, standing beside the Grand River.

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine — Republican Sen. John McCain insisted on Monday that he has been consistently right on both Iraq and Afghanistan while Democratic rival Sen. Barack Obama “has been completely wrong.”
As Obama toured the war zones, McCain ridiculed him from afar during a visit with the first President Bush at his summer home on the Atlantic.
Billboards in Florida Link Democrats to Burning World Trade Center
A Florida man has stirred up controversy in the Orlando area by buying ad space on billboards that show an image of the falling World Trade Center’s Twin Towers alongside the words, “Please don’t vote for a Democrat.”
The ad also points readers to a Web site, www.TheRepublicanSong.com, which posts a country-rock music video written and performed by billboard creator and businessman Mike Meehan.
Maliki: I Support Obama’s Withdrawal Timetable
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki told a German magazine that he supports Barack Obama’s plan to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq within 16 months of taking office.
“U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama is right when he talks about 16 months,” al-Maliki told Der Spiegel. He said he wants U.S. troops to leave “as soon as possible.”
Anti-Obama Bloggers Question Why Google Froze Their Accounts

Some bloggers opposed to Barack Obama say they suspect Obama’s supporters — with the assistance of Google — may have tried to censor them when the Internet giant froze their Web sites for five days last month.
Seven blogs run by Democrats who oppose Obama’s nomination for the presidency were incorrectly flagged as spam sites by Blogger, the hosting service Google has owned since 2003.
Democrats to Launch Independent Ad Campaign to Boost Obama
WASHINGTON — The Democratic National Committee plans to target Republican John McCain and help Democrat Barack Obama with an independent ad campaign run by veteran Democratic strategist Jonathan Prince, Democrats familiar with the decision said Thursday.
By law, the effort would be prohibited from coordinating with either Obama’s presidential campaign or with the DNC. The ads would be financed with party money, however.
South Carolina State Senator Compares Obama to bin Laden, At Least By Name
COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Republican state senator is being criticized for a post on his blog that shows photos of Barack Obama and Usama bin Laden wearing similar clothing, along with a line that says the difference between them is “a little B.S.”
The image was posted on Sen. Kevin Bryant’s blog on Friday. It appears to be a photo of a T-shirt with images of bin Laden and Obama wearing turbans and the words “OBAMA” AND “OSAMA,” with the “B” and “S” highlighted in red.
Ex-Clinton Aide Solis-Doyle Checked With Hillary Before Joining Obama Camp
CHICAGO — Hillary Rodham Clinton’s former campaign manager, now on Barack Obama’s team, says she could easily work for her old boss again if Clinton were on the Democratic ticket.
Clinton replaced Patti Solis Doyle after poor early showings in the primaries, but Solis Doyle told The Associated Press on Wednesday she didn’t think their longtime friendship was permanently damaged. She joined the Obama campaign last month as chief of staff to Obama’s eventual running mate.
Gore, Pelosi Address Liberal Bloggers at Convention
AUSTIN — Former Vice President Al Gore praised the left-leaning bloggers of Netroots Nation on Saturday as being at the forefront of reclaiming American democracy and urged the activists to mobilize for global climate protection.
“Thank you for the movement that you have created,” Gore said. “I can’t tell you how important I think it is that you continue what you are doing.”
McCain: I Know ‘How to Win Wars’
ALBUQUERQUE — Republican John McCain said Tuesday he knows “how to win wars” and that the strategy of increasing troop levels in Iraq should also be applied to Afghanistan.
Moments earlier, his Democratic rival, Barack Obama, said in a speech in Washington that the U.S. must end the war in Iraq and that Afghanistan, by contrast, is “a war that we have to win.”
